Hitachi Contract Driver Josef Newgarden Takes Second Place in Fourth
Round of US IndyCar Series

Tokyo, April 15, 2019 --- Hitachi Automotive Systems, Ltd. today announced that driver Josef Newgarden of Team Penske, who is sponsored by the Hitachi Group, came in second place in the final race of the fourth round in the IndyCar Series that took place on April 14, 2019, on the street circuit of Long Beach, California.

The IndyCar Series race known as the Grand Prix of Long Beach entered its 45th session this year. It has the second longest history after the Indianapolis 500, which has been held more than 100 times. Within the series, the race is highly popular as a major event, and the circuit is laid out centered on Long Beach’s downtown area by the sea. Drivers compete by driving 85 laps around the street circuit, which has a total length of 3.2 kilometers (1.968 miles).
In the final race on April 14, Josef Newgarden started from the fourth grid in the second row. Amid the confusing situation due to full-course caution—which prohibits overtaking over the entire circuit—from the many crashes in the early part of the race, Josef Newgarden drove calmly and maintained his position at the front. Supported by the team’s strategy in the pit during the middle of the race, he raced his car smoothly to finish in second place.

As a result, Josef Newgarden has finished on the podium in three out of the four rounds since the series started a month ago, maintaining the top overall position in the yearly championship. He is in a great position to aim for the Series Championship over the remaining 13 races.

Hitachi Automotive Systems will continue to contribute to promoting motorsport and creating even further awareness of the Hitachi brand through sponsorship of IndyCar and other motorsports.
